Artist Statement!
I am Sister Mary Lucy Okwuowulu,a Nigerian Catholic nun and artist dedicated to blending faith, culture, and technology to create meaningful connections through art.
My journey as an artist has been shaped by my academic studies in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Fine Arts at the American University and my current pursuit of a Master’s in Visual Media at the American University of Florence .These experiences have equipped me with the tools to explore the intersection of tradition and innovation, appreciating the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.
Central to my work is reimagining Marian iconography through the lens of Nigerian cultural identity. I intend to reinterpret traditional depictions of the Virgin Mary, integrating symbols, patterns, and stories that resonate with the rich diversity of Nigerian culture. Through sculpture, painting, sewing, bead making, digital media, and application.I aim to create art that is both spiritually profound and culturally inclusive.
My current project extends this vision into the digital realm, developing user-friendly platforms and apps that bring these culturally enriched images to life. By combining traditional art with UX/UI design, I strive to make religious art more accessible and engaging for a global target audience.

This work is more than an artistic endeavor—it is a mission. It is about representation, preserving cultural heritage, and building bridges between faith ,tradition and modern technology. By collaborating with Nigerian communities and drawing from their traditions, I aim to create art that reflects their stories while inspiring others to explore their own intersections of culture and faith.

Ultimately, my art is a celebration of both identity and devotion, offering a fresh perspective on sacred imagery while inviting others into a meaningful dialogue between the past and the present. My hope is to inspire a new generation of artists to honor their roots while embracing innovation, creating art that resonates across cultures and generations.
